Historically, science and spirituality have been intentionally separated. We are now, however, arriving at a time when, in our understanding of spirituality and science, we are finding common ground. We are finding that matter is not as absolute as we once thought it to be and spirituality perhaps not as nebulous. We are viewing healing in increasingly holistic ways. The field of counselling is similarly shifting alongside these new understandings and must do so in order to remain current. In this book I will explore aspects of this shift with a specific focus on the incorporation of spirituality and religion into the therapeutic relationship in a multicultural setting.
This text is relevant for health care professionals including psychiatrists, psychologists, counsellors, therapists, social workers, child care workers, crisis intervention personnel, doctors, and nurses. Anyone who works with others in a potentially intimate helping capacity could draw meaning from this work and incorporate some aspects into their interactions with those they encounter through their vocation.
The information presented herein will have particular value for those working within a multicultural society such as we experience in North America. In this type of environment, the target audience could be expanded to include educators, particularly school teachers who, through this information, could enhance their spiritual and religious sensitivities to their culturally diverse students. Though some sections of this text would be relevant to the lay person, this writing is primarily intended for a professional audience.
I will demonstrate that in North America the public's general interest in spirituality or religion is widespread and consequently germane to the field of counselling. Interest in spirituality has in recent years also found its way into the field of counselling, however, its role yet remains undefined. This writing will therefore contribute to the profession by providing a reader-friendly overview of this topic. For those health care professionals who would like to incorporate spirituality into their work, this text will provide some concrete and practical suggestions. This writing is not intended as a 'how to', rather, as an introduction and general overview of the topic: a place from which to begin and perhaps broaden one's perspective.
As a result of reading this book, the reader will be introduced to historical and current perspectives of the relationship of spirituality and religion to the helping profession. The reader will be invited to consider the world of quantum physics; explore the connection between mind, body, and emotions; and entertain some views of what role our spiritual aspects may play in our overall experience. The reader will be taken through an exploration of arguments for the inclusion of spirituality into the work of helping, including ethical considerations. The reader will then receive an overview of the diversity amongst religions and spiritual practices while being encouraged to entertain the possibility of finding universality and common ground among them. Practical considerations of how to incorporate spirituality into counselling in an ethical and meaningful way will be offered. Examples of potentially neutral spiritual practices will be presented.
